Pakistan, Turkmenistan discuss goods transit through Gwadar, Karachi ports

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood has appreciated Turkmenistan’s proposal for transit of Turkmen goods through Gwadar and Karachi ports via railways and road transportation.

In a meeting with Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Pakistan Atadjan Movlamov on Thursday, the PM’s aide noted that the bilateral trade was below its true potential and expressed resolve to take appropriate steps to increase the volume of trade between the two countries.

Both sides agreed that the 3rd meeting of the Joint Working on Trade (JWT) should be held soon to discuss wide-ranging bilateral trade issues. It was also agreed that to finalise the agenda for the 3rd Meeting of the JWT, both sides would hold technical level consultations.

The ambassador showed a keen interest in holding the 6th meeting of Pak-Turkmenistan Joint Governmental Commission this year. He also discussed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Gwadar and Turkmen ports.

It is pertinent to mention that in light of Pakistan’s interaction with Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan also wants to have trade relations with Pakistan. Hence, the Ministry of Commerce is developing a strategy to incorporate Turkmenistan into the plan.
