KARACHI: Yousuf Murtaza Baloch of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won the by-election held for the Sindh Assembly’s constituency PS-88 (Malir-II) on Wednesday, according to unofficial results.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Baloch secured more than 24,000 votes, followed by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan’s (TLP) Syed Kashif Ali Shah with a little over 6,000 votes. Jan Sher Junejo of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) trailed behind with close to 5,000 votes.
Baloch is the son of Ghulam Murtaza Baloch who had won the seat in the 2018 general elections by bagging more than 22,000 votes against Muhammad Rizwan Khan of the PTI who got 16,386 votes.
The seat fell vacant after Baloch died of Covid-19 in June last.
The constituency that mainly consists of the city’s suburbs experienced an aggressive election campaign from all political parties, especially the PPP and the PTI.
Polling for the election was marred by claims of vote-rigging and violence as all contesting parties traded charges against each other.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah congratulated Baloch on his victory and said Malir was the party’s stronghold.
“The people of PS-88 have expressed confidence in the party’s leadership,” he said.
