UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has been elected as a member of three United Nations (UN) bodies, reflecting the international community’s recognition of the country’s positive role at the forum.
The bodies include the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the Commission on Population and Development (CPD). This is the sixth time that Pakistan got elected to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).
The elections took place on Tuesday at a session of the 54-member Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the United Nations.
As a Commission member, Pakistan has been engaged in fostering international cooperation between the UN and its member states to combat national and transnational crime, including organised crime, money laundering promoting the role of criminal law in protecting the environment and improving the efficiency and fairness of criminal justice administration systems.
Pakistan triumphed with 50 out of 53 votes in the election for the membership of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW). Also elected were China, Iran, Japan, and Lebanon.
In addition, Pakistan was elected to the Commission on the Population and Development (CPD) which conducts demographic research, supports intergovernmental processes in the area of populations and development, and assists countries in developing their capacity to produce and analyze population data and information. Other elected included to the panel Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and China.
Pakistan will assume the membership of three Commission on January 1, 2022.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said that Pakistan’s simultaneous election to the three important commissions is a reflection of the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s active role and constructive contributions at the UN.
“These commissions play a pivotal role in enhancing international cooperation on various social and economic issues,” the FO spokesperson said.
He said that Pakistan will continue to foster international cooperation for combating transnational organised crime and improving efficiency and fairness of the criminal justice administration system, promote gender equality and women empowerment and support initiatives aimed at assisting countries in developing their capacity to produce and analyze population data and information.
