ISLAMABAD: The Flood Forecasting Division on Monday issued flood alerts across Azad Jammu and Kashmir after rain drenched Indian-occupied Kashmir triggering flash floods in some towns and bringing down soaring temperatures.
The weather office said that the Jammu district saw the highest rainfall (150mm) in the region in the past 24 hours till 8:30 am on Monday, followed by 76mm in Katra and 28mm in Khanal town, Hindustan Times reported.
“Present showers may generate flash floods and landslides in hilly areas, which may lead to blockage of roads [in the held region],” a weather agency official said.
The agency has forecast a flood in Chenab River at Head Marala saying an inflow of 200,000 to 300,000 cusecs of water is expected between 2:00 pm to 1:00 am.
It further said that a flood-like situation is also expected at Khanki Headworks on July 13 and later on at the Qadirabad Headworks in Mandi Bahauddin District.
“The drains falling into Chenab will witness a ‘high to very high flood’ between 12 and 13 July,” the agency said, adding that all concerned departments have been directed to take appropriate measures.
Floods have also been feared in upper parts of the country with glaciers beginning to melt at the start of the summer season as the government has directed the people to remain vigilant.
