WFP thanks Pakistan for helping repair damaged humanitarian aid planes

ISLAMABAD: The executive director for the United Nations World Food Programme on Thursday thanked the Pakistani government for repairing its damaged planes in Kabul.

David Beasley, who heads WFP operations, has tweeted a video message via his official handle thanking the government of Pakistan for helping it scale up to meet the needs of the Afghan people.

Our damaged planes from Kabul have been repaired with the help of Pakistan government, as he thanked the country, he tweeted.

“WFP is now ready to establish a humanitarian air bridge between Islamabad-Kabul & other destinations in Afghanistan,” Beasley said.

The Pakistani government has really helped us bring the aircraft that were damaged in Kabul, he said in a video statement standing on an Islamabad tarmac.

“This will allow us to scale up to meet the needs of the Afghan people.”

Pakistan airlifted 1,335 foreigners from Kabul in 24 flights since Aug 15

Pertinent to note that Pakistan has so far helped 1,335 foreigners of many countries, operating in Afghanistan, evacuate Kabul starting the same day the Taliban took over the presidential palace on August 15.

In the flight operations spanning from August 15- to 24 period, Pakistani foreign ministry mission in Kabul has run 24 evacuation flights wherein among Pakistani nationals, were a total of 1,335 foreigners of various countries.

Moreover, Prime Minister Imran Khan said during a meeting with Beasley that the formation of an inclusive Afghan government and positive engagement of the international community with Afghanistan is the way forward to avert any humanitarian crisis and secure peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Imran Khan appreciated the role of WFP as the leading international humanitarian organization for delivering food assistance in emergencies and for working with nations worldwide to improve nutrition and build resilience.

The PM underlined that Pakistan has been a beneficiary of various WFP projects that are being implemented in the country and values its partnership with the organization.

Executive Director Beasley expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its role in facilitating the work of the World Food Program in providing food assistance to the Afghans. He also discussed with the Prime Minister the ways of facilitating the continued provision of humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
