Retired civil servant passes away

ISLAMABAD: Dr Safdar Mahmood, retired federal secretary and columnist, passed away in Lahore, his nephew said through a Facebook post on Monday.

The funeral will be held after Zuhr at Masjid Allah-o-Akbar in the Defence neighbourhood in Lahore, Huzaifa Sarfraz shared.

Mahmood graduated from Government College in Lahore before joining the civil service and retired in BPS-22 after serving on many key posts.

An avid historian and leading political commentator, Mahmood was best known for his book Pakistan Kyun Toota — a scholarly work discussing at length the breakup of former East Pakistan, and the events that contributed towards the discontent among its people.

According to his profile on the website of the Institute of Policy Studies, an Islamabad-based think-tank, his more than one dozen books have been favourably reviewed by the local and foreign press and are widely quoted by research scholars.

Some of his books have also been translated into German, Chinese, Bengali, Uzbek and Sindhi languages.

Mahmood had also received the Pride of Performance award for his contributions in the field of history.
