PML-N MP Pervaiz Malik passes away

LAHORE: President of Lahore chapter of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and member of the National Assembly, Pervaiz Malik, passed away of cardiac arrest on Monday, his family said.

Malik, 73, had been ill for a long time, reports citing people close to the deceased said. University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Javed Akram confirmed that he had died due to a heart attack.

Malik had excused himself from the presidency due to his illness but continued to look after party affairs on the leadership’s direction, his son, Ali Pervaiz Malik, told the media.

His funeral will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at a ground near Gaddafi Stadium, the family announced through a communiqué.

A longtime member of the party, Malik had been elected to the National Assembly five times from Lahore on a PML-N ticket. He was elected from the NA-133 (Lahore-XI) seat in the 2018 elections.

His wife, Shaista Pervaiz, and son, Ali Pervaiz Malik, both are sitting parliamentarians representing the party in the lower house.

In a statement, party president Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over Malik’s death and said the party had lost a “sincere leader and a good man”.

“He was a sincere brother, friend and ally and his demise is a great loss,” Sharif said, noting his commitment and loyalty to the party and PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

PML-N parliamentarian Hina Pervaiz Butt offered her condolences on hearing the news, referring to Malik as a “true companion” of the party’s supreme leader and deposed prime minister, Nawaz Sharif.
