Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Saad Rizvi’s lawyer on Wednesday requested the Lahore High Court (LHC) to adjourn the hearing of his client’s case in light of the group’s agreement with the government, according to a news outlet.
Rizvi’s lawyer Mian Pervaiz said that his client wants an adjournment of the case because “progress is taking place on the issue” between the government and the TLP.
LHC Chief Justice Ameer Bhatti said that the case has nothing to do with the agreement, but it is about the maintainability of the petition filed by the TLP against the government’s order to keep Rizvi detained.
Justice Bhatti observed that the notification challenged by the TLP has already been expired so how can the petitioner expects from the court to continue hearing the case.
“You should have challenged the fresh order of detention,” Justice Tariq Saleem Shiekh, another member of the bench, said.
In reply, the counsel said that he wants more time to prepare the case and asked for an adjournment.
Justice Bhatti subsequently adjourned the case till Thursday.
The court had taken up TLP’s petition against the government’s decision to keep Rizvi in jail despite court orders for his release.
In April this year, the Punjab government had detained Rizvi after the TLP had held protests, which had led to violence in cities across Pakistan, in a bid to press the government for the expulsion of the French envoy to Pakistan.
