LAHORE: The Chief Minister Punjab of Usman Buzdar has granted the initial approval to the summary sent to him for the revocation of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP)’s proscribed status.
The summary was sent to him by the Punjab home department on Thursday. After granting preliminary approval to the summary, the CM has now sought approval from the Cabinet to end the party’s proscribed status through circulation.
The document was forwarded after approval was accorded by the cabinet’s sub-committee on law and order.
Once Buzdar signs the document, the federal government will be approached to do away with the radical group’s proscribed status, said the provincial department.
The government outlawed the hardline group under the anti-terrorism laws in April but the fact that TLP enjoys a fiercely loyal following of tens of thousands made it difficult to enforce the ban.
Also Thursday, in compliance with the deal between the government and the group, the provincial government removed from the fourth schedule the names of at least 90 activists and supporters of the outfit.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Minister for Law Raja Basharat. It reviewed the decisions taken by the steering committee formed to implement the agreement.
The meeting also decided to release 100 more protestors from different jails in the province.
Punjab police chief Rao Sardar Ali Khan, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Zafar Nasrullah Khan and other members of the committee attended the meeting.
