The other side of a picture

As today’s life has taken a new turn with the emergence of social media, human life has been seriously affected. There is no doubt that social media is used very excessively by the young in the present period. There was a time when students like us had to face restrictions and checks by our elders.

Truly, it is the fear of bad habits which compelled them to keep a check on our daily activities and our connections with people around us. Contrarily, children and boys of this time show a hardline disregard and pay little attention to parents and elders’ guidance, hard-earned experiences, lessons of life and many other similar acts and instructions that can help them lead a good and meaningful life. In current times, Western culture has undeniably held great sway over the minds of people living in emerging societies whose culture and lifestyle differ in numerous ways. A case in point is Irrfan Khan, the former real actor in the Indian film industry and his movie “Hindi Medium”. This movie shows how Western concepts of liberty keep children away from their parents and make them self-centred and independent of parental caring and their helping hands or the principle of reciprocity. They have houses for old people, so that the aged may not be a burden on the shoulders of their parents. Whereas, the Islamic position regarding this is very different.

In addition, although co-education is beneficial for the cooperative and collaborative environment and learning, it has been reported many a time that by co-education, harassment in schools is rising. There are many problems which the developing world has been confronting for a long time. These include poverty, refugee influx into developing countries, the challenge of climate change sprouted mainly by the large industries and factories for economic ends by the Western powers, and so on.

The other side of a picture always paints a true picture, so keeping in view all these truths, our society needs to learn that recognition of truth is like half-done work. So, the right thing to do is now to accept the harsh reality and keep pace with changes in accordance with their culture, civilization and our own original and unique attributes must always be given top priority. By doing so, we can be in a position to stand as a bulwark against all cultural assaults and patchwork will no longer exist. Khalil Jibran has correctly stated: “Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox, whose philosopher is a juggler and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking.”
