ECP earns a rare praise from Govt’s chief spokesman

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Thursday welcomed the decision of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to constitute technical committees on the matters of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voting rights for overseas Pakistanis.

This was stated by the minister on social-networking website Twitter.

“The decisions of the parliament are honourable to all institutions,” he said, adding that the role of the ECP chairman and its members is significant in the election process.

Fawad said that the government will extend full cooperation to the election commission in this regard.

Earlier in a joint parliament session on November 17, the government had managed to make amendments to the Elections Act, 2017 for the use of electronic voting machines and voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.

A week ago, the commission had constituted three panels to ‘implement’ legislation on EVMs and voting facility for overseas Pakistanis.

According to a news outlet, the first committee will look into the technical aspects, the second will oversee the financial cost of the process and the third will point out difficulties and suggest amendments to the existing laws and rules.

The technical committee will be headed by the ECP secretary, the second committee will be headed by the additional secretary (admin) and the third committee will be headed by the director general (law).
