Pakistani weightlifter Talha Talib on Saturday thanked his fans for supporting him in the World Weightlifting Championship, which is being held in Tashkent.
He had won a bronze medal in the 67kg snatch event of the championship on Friday. He had lifted 143kg in his first attempt. His following attempts of lifting 146kg and 147kg were unsuccessful, but his first attempt had proved enough for him to secure a medal for the country.
On Saturday, in a Twitter post, he said he had not responded to messages earlier because his Twitter account was not working in Uzbekistan. He further said that he hopes to win a gold medal for the country soon too. He also asked his fans to keep supporting him.
Last year, the 22-year-old weightlifter had won a bronze medal in the same category at the Asian Championship and his performance had earned him a place at Tokyo Olympics.
At the Olympics, he had held the gold medal spot until the final round before eventually being bumped down and denied a podium finish. In the end, he had finished fifth as China’s Lijun Chen, Colombia’ Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano and Italy’s Mirko Zani had captured gold, silver and bronze respectively.
