KARACHI: The police submitted the challan in the murder of a young man who was killed during what initially was declared an encounter but found to be a pre-planned murder following an interim investigation.
Arsalan Mehsud, 18, son of a local leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was killed in the shootout in Orangi Town No 5, resulting in the registration of a case against a police officer and his “private” aide and suspension of Orangi Town Station House Officer (SHO) Azam Gopang.
The challan submitted to the anti-terrorism court (ATC) said the suspects killed Mehsud on the order of Gopang and later tried to give an impression of a police encounter. The second man, Yasir, was injured by gunfire and eye-witnesses identified the suspects.
The challan also noted the spent casing recovered from the crime scene also matched with the weapon of the suspect, police constable Tauheed.
It said Gopang left his personal revolver and three bullets at the crime scene to create an impression regarding a police encounter.
“We have written letters to concerned authorities to verify armed licenses of suspects, Azam Gopang and Touhid,” the challan read, informing that reports related to post mortem and arms licenses are not yet received.
The FIR for the murder was registered against three suspects — SHO Gopang, constable Tauheed and his friend Umair under sections 34 (common intention), 109 (punishment of abetment), 302 (murder), 324 (attempted murder) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
