ISLAMABAD: Responding to Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed’s statement in which he requested the country’s ‘establishment’ to intervene in order to ensure that general elections were held in the country immediately, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman said on Saturday the statement was a reflective of the government’s
defeated psyche and a sense of despair.
She also argued that the interior minister could not interpret the constitution on his own. “Once the no-trust motion is passed, Imran Khan will cease to be the country’s prime minister,” she stated categorically.
Sherry asked as to on what basis the government would file ‘treason’ cases
against the opposition parties’ leaders. “And if that ‘letter’ which PM
Imran had waved in front of a crowd during a public gathering in Islamabad
forms the basis of these cases, then who will take responsibility for
concealing it for 17 days?” she questioned.
She wondered that it was only after the opposition had moved the no-trust
motion that the government realized that it was a ‘conspiracy’. “Vote of
no-trust is a constitutional act, and PM Imran is not above the law,” she
asserted.
PPP senator said the prime minister was trying to project himself as a
leader of the stature of the late prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZAB),
in every respect. “Initially he tried to pose himself as a ‘man of honour’
like ZAB, and now he is telling the nation there are threats to his life,”
she said, adding that the premier should remember that the late prime
minister had made Pakistan an atomic power and tried to gather Muslim Ummah
on one platform. “He also gave the country independent foreign policy,” she
recalled.
Sherry went on to say that former president and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali
Zardari had got the Shamsi airbase back from the USA and laid the foundation
of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). “What have you done that you
have become a threat for the USA and West?” she asked.
Truth of the matter was that, PPP vice president added, that Imran Khan was
inciting PTI workers to agitation by building a ‘narrative’. “And hence, he
is also making an effort to escape no-confidence motion,” she said.
“It is better that the prime minister resigns from his post and go home,”
she advised.
