Hamza to move LHC over Punjab CM election issue

LAHORE: PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz will file a constitutional petition in the Lahore High Court on Friday to seek court order for holding election of chief minister in the Punjab Assembly.

Punjab Assembly speaker, deputy speaker and others were made respondents in the petition, which prays that the post of chief minister was vacant since April 1 and the court should order summoning of the assembly session and immediate election of the CM.

It was also requested in the petition to declare as illegal the step to seal the Punjab Assembly gates.

Earlier, PML-N leader Attaullah Tarrar could not submit the petition regarding the Punjab Assembly as the diary branch of the Lahore High Court was closed on Thursday.

Tarrar had rushed to the LHC but the diary branch was closed for the day and he could not submit the petition.

Hamza to take oath after symbolic PA session:

According to another report, PML-N Punjab MPA Khalil Tahir Sindhu has said that Hamza will take oath as the new Punjab chief minister after he was “elected” to the office in a symbolic session of the provincial assembly held at a Lahore hotel on Wednesday.

Former Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar will administer the oath to the “newly-elected” chief minister at Lahore’s Bagh-e-Jinnah, he said.

The PML-N MPA further shared that Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhamad Mazari will also meet with PML-N leadership soon.

As many as 199 members of the assembly had attended the symbolic session and voted in favour of Hamza.

Taking to Twitter, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, who was in attendance in the session to express solidarity with Hamza, had said: “Hamza Shehbaz Sharif with 199 votes elected as Chief Minister Punjab. Shukar Alhamdolillah.”
