Sardar Tanveer Ilyas elected Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir unopposed

MUZAFFARABAD: Sardar Tanveer Ilyas of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was elected unopposed as the 14th prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

He was elected unopposed as the unified opposition boycotted the election and did not submit nomination papers of their candidates.

Ilyas needed 27 votes in the 53-seat assembly to be elected as prime minister.

Presided over by Speaker Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, the session of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly started at 12:00 pm for the election.

The session was convened by President Sultan Mahmood under Article 16(3) of the AJK Constitution for the second time in less than 48 hours as the previous summary lacked the executive approval of the then prime minister.

Members of the opposition parties were present during the session.

Former prime minister Abdul Qayyum Niazi also attended the session.
