Chairman NAB Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal whose term expired last year in October but was asked by the then PTI government to continue till the appointment of new Chairman, is now finally and likely to be replaced with Bashir Memon, the former DG FIA.
Sources told this correspondent that PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif wants installation of Bashir Memon on the seat of NAB Chairman and in this regard, he has also asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to contact and reach a consensus with the allied parties.
The sources said the Prime Minister has conveyed the desire of PML-N Quaid to other parties in the coalition government. “The parties especially the PPP has not responded or given the green signal on the matter”.
They said that Bashir Memon, during his tenure in the civil service, had the repute of an officer having the audacity and character not to bow down under any sort of government pressure. “This is the reason that he had a very uneasy relationship with the PTI government and resigned from the top seat of FIA just few days before he was due to retire.
Also during the PPP government, Bashir Memon had earned the wrath of then President Asif Ali Zardari after he refused to make compromise in an investigation against Muzaffar Tappi, the step-brother of Zardari. The fake accounts case that landed Zardari in jail was also unearthed by the FIA under the leadership of Memon
In this backdrop, the sources said it is yet to be seen whether the PPP agrees to the name of Bashir Memon for the slot of NAB Chairman.
