Court orders cases registration against Rana Sanaullah, others

LAHORE: An Additional District and Sessions Court on Wednesday ordered the registration of cases against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, CCPO Lahore and DIG Operations.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mian Mudassar Umar ordered the registration of cases on charges of police torture on PTI workers and lawyers during the party’s recently held ‘Azadi March’ towards Islamabad.

Advocate Haider Majeed had filed an application in the Additional District and Session Court Lahore, seeking registration of cases against the interior minister and Punjab police officials under Section-166(1), 352 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The learned judge after completing the hearing on the application announced the registration of criminal cases against Rana Sanaullah, CCPO Lahore and DIG Operations under Section-166, 352 and 427.

Meanwhile, Lahore High Court accepted for hearing the Lahore Bar Association petition against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, the Punjab IG Police, CCPO Lahore and other officers.

LHC Justice Ch Abdul Aziz set the petition for hearing on June 22 and issued notices to the respondents for their replies. Lahore Bar Association President Rao Sami, General Secretary Ammar Yasir Khokar and Shakir Ali Chahal filed the petition, seeking the court directives against Rana Sanaullah, the Punjab IG Police and other police officers for unleashing inhumane baton-charge and tear gas against peaceful protesters during PTI long march on May 25. They contended in the petition that the police meted out worst treatment to political activists and tortured lawyers during the long march. They said that the police also carried out illegal raids on the houses of PTI leaders in night prior to the long march.

May 25 clashes

On May 25, a clash erupted between Lahore police and PTI workers marching to Islamabad for long march. Police resorted to tear gas shelling and baton-charged in an effort to disperse PTI activists.

On the eve of the march, the government rounded up over 1,000 PTI leaders and workers in a crackdown designed to derail the party’s plans for the march.
