ISLAMABAD: In a major party shakeup for Punjab Province, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Saturday appointed new presidents of the party’s chapters of Central, Northern and Southern Punjab.

The move comes on heels of reports that Imran Khan was unhappy over the performance of the party’s leadership of Punjab for failing to mobilise the party workers for the recently held Long March and the party leaders have been penalised and removed from their offices.

During the recent Long March, Dr Yasmin Rashid rose among the party ranks for showing unmatched bravery and courage despite being subjected to worst police torture. Dr Yasmin not only braved the police baton charge but also managed to break shackles and overcome barriers to arrive federal Capital despite her car came under brutal police attack.

Hammad Azhar also had shown his mettle by braving the police torture and reaching the federal capital against all odds. Both Dr Yasmin and Hammaz Azhar got injured but the brute police torture failed to stop them from entering the federal capital and join the Long March.

According to the party notification issued by PTI Secretary General Asad Umar following the approval of chairman Imran Khan, former health minister Punjab Dr Yasmin Rashid has been appointed as President PTI central Punjab to help revive the party in across central Punjab. Hammad Azhar would assist her as Party Secretary.

Aamer Mehmood Kiani has been appointed as the president of the PTI Northern
Punjab chapter while Senator Aon Abbas Bappi has been appointed as President of PTI South Punjab chapter.

With this order, Imran Khan has removed Shafqat Mahmood as President PTI Central Punjab, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar as president South Punjab and Sadaqat Abbasi as President PTI Northern Punjab.

According to the party sources, following his lack of interest in the party affairs, Imran Khan asked Shafqat Mehmood to step down from the party’s Punjab
president post.

In his resignation, Mr Mahmood thanked the party chairman for the trust he had reposed in him while appointing him to the party office. He stated that he could not continue to discharge his duties as PTI Punjab president, but will keep serving the party after regaining health.
