The Indian Supreme Court has sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s plea, in which he raised an objection to the sealing of Jauhar University in Rampur.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Azam Khan said the UP government has not removed the barbed wire fence from the university, despite the Supreme Court’s stay order.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khan, said the university cannot function due to the barbed wires. He added that the state authorities are in contempt by not removing the barbed wires as the court has stayed the proceeding. Sibal said he wishes to file a contempt petition against the state government.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the UP government, said that a barbed wire fence was placed before the court passed an order on 27 May, this year. “We have not done anything post-May 27. The barbed wire was already there,” he said.
The Supreme Court asked the state government to file its response by Tuesday (19 July) and posted the matter for further hearing on Friday (22 July).
