Alvi phones family of army officer killed by BLA

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday telephoned the family of Lieutenant-Colonel Laeeq Baig Mirza, who was abducted and killed earlier this week in Ziarat, and extended his condolences.

Mirza was abducted late on Tuesday as he travelled back to the city of Quetta from a hill station with his family and a friend, security officials said.

The militant Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) released a statement saying its fighters had seized Mirza, a rare attack on an officer of his rank in the region that borders Iran and Afghanistan.

Responding to Baig’s execution, Pakistan Army soldiers backed by helicopters in multiple raids killed at least seven insurgents, the military said Friday.

The president also talked to the family of Havaldar Khan Muhammad who was killed in an attack in Ziarat on July 15.

He prayed for the elevated ranks of the dead and paid tribute to them for sacrificing their lives for the country.

Alvi expressed his sympathy to the bereaved and prayed for their patience.
