Imran’s interim bail in long march-linked cases extended

ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday extended until July 30 the interim bail of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in all 11 cases registered against him in connection with the long march on the capital.

Hours after Khan called off his day-long march on May 26, he and top members of his party were booked in cases registered at police stations across Islamabad over allegations of arson and vandalism in the capital.

During the proceedings on Thursday, Islamabad (West) district and sessions judge Kamran Basharat Mufti heard Khan’s application for an extension in the interim bail before accepting it.

However, he refused to grant him bail in a fresh case registered at Kohsar police station over the absence of the accused.

The judge accepted Khan’s request for exemption from attendance as the latter is in Lahore.

He said the cases are of political natures but the accused must also appear.

Rai Tajamal, an associate for Khan’s counsel Babar Awan, told the court that Awan could not appear before the court as he is traveling abroad.

The judge remarked that Khan must appear in the latest case.

“It is a fresh bail in case number 425 and if the accused appears, then I will issue the order,” remarked the judge.

He also ordered to fix the fresh bail application for the next hearing on July 30 on the application of Tajamal.
