Pakistan enjoys a geostrategic position for inland and distant transportation as 95 per cent freight and 90pc passengers use road facilities in the country. Unfortunately, the number of road accidents in Pakistan is also among the highest in the region. Reckless driving, over-speeding and fire eruption due to inappropriate transportation of dangerous goods are some of the common reasons that result in loss of precious lives. The agony of mourners increases when it comes to the identification of dead bodies.
Countries having larger and advanced road networks ensure safety by strict implementation of road safety programmes. Majority of the roads in Pakistan do not conform to the safety standards. No one obeys the speed limit, road signs are broken or missing, and transportation of highly inflammable material continues without observing precautionary measures. Besides, licence issuance, checking for intoxication aong the drivers, physical fitness, and regular inspection of vehicles are rarely done in Pakistan. If the authorities concerned genuinely want to save innocent lives, they need to implement road safety plans with honesty and sincerity.
