Man who went ‘missing’ from Islamabad reaches home

ISLAMABAD: Haseeb Hamza was produced before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) by police on Wednesday, a day after the court warned to summon heads of the intelligence agencies if the administration failed to recover the young man who was picked up from outside his home in Islamabad.

Hamza, 27, was taken away by around 20 men, 15 of whom were in black uniform, on the intervening night of August 22 and 23, according to a petition filed for his recovery.

In his petition, Zulfiqar Ali, Hamza’s father, said his son was a farmer and worked in the Layyah district of Punjab, adding the unidentified men apprehended him and seized several items, including five laptops, six cellphones and some documents, during the raid.

He made the federation of Pakistan, defense secretary, chief of Military Intelligence (MI) and the interior ministry respondents in the case, urging the court to direct respondents to produce the detainee.

During the proceedings on Wednesday, Athar Minallah, chief judge of the high court, asked Hamza where he had been, to which he replied he was blindfolded at the time he was taken and had no knowledge of where he was kept.

The judge then asked the police about the inquiry the chief of Islamabad police had conducted. He was informed the police were investigating the delay in registering the initial case as well as the disappearance.

Subsequently, Ali, the father, thanked the court and Islamabad police for the safe recovery of his son.

Hamza’s family also thanked the prime minister and Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan.

SINDH POLICE ASKED TO PRODUCE MISSING PERSONS

Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the authorities to accelerate efforts for the immediate recovery of six persons who were “missing”.

The court also sought a report from the Sindh police and provincial Home Department within six weeks.

During the hearing, a woman told the court her brother, Mehdi Ali Naqvi, was missing for over five years.

She said that at every hearing, investigation papers were handed over to her. “We want the safe recovery of our brother. What will we do with these papers?” she asked.

“Police and other law-enforcement agencies are making efforts for his recovery. The court is also examining all the cases. He will be recovered soon,” the court said.

It also directed the authorities concerned to trace three others — Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Hussain and Malik Rizwan — and submit a report.
