Human is commonly known by its phenotype; its physical appearance. When a child is born, he/she can be determined easily as a boy or a girl. Along with two genders of human race, there is a third one known as transgender.
The term transgender refers to a person whose gender identity or expressions do not conform to what is typically associated with the gender to which they were assigned at birth. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, was introduced in the National Assembly by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) during the government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) which was subsequently passed.
Interestingly, the current opposition was not opposed to the bill at the time, and in fact it had strongly supported the bill in parliament.
There are multiple flaws in the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which is a matter of heated debate in the political arena, mainstream media and among the citizens of all shades of opinion on social media.
The major area that needs to be deliberated upon is sub-section 4 of Section 3. Even the so-called liberal countries do not allow a person to change his/her gender without being examined by a team of doctors, including a psychologist.
