Uogians walk to promote gender equality for peace

GUJRAT: With a view to spreading awareness about and curbing the menace of gender-based violence for promoting peace and stability, the students and faculty from the Department of Sociology organised a walk here at Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat the other day (Wednesday).

The walk was organized on the directives of the Higher Education Department and Women Development Department of the Government of Punjab.

Leading from the front, social sciences Prof. Dr Faisal Mahmood Mirza vowed full support for the measures proposed by the government to curb the rising incidence of gender-based violence, especially against women.

The participants of the walk carried placards and banners and raised slogans that called for  immediate measures at various levels for elimination of gender discrimination and violence. Dr Faisal Mahmood Mirza said that gender discrimination or violence in our society was due to neglecting human rights.  “Respecting humanity is the key to ending gender-based vviolenc,” Dr Mirza said.

He underscored the need for both women and men to work together for achieving  social peace and stability.

“The dream of social development is unattainable with a disregard of the rights and duties of both sexes at the human level,” he emphasized.

Chairperson of the Department of Sociology, Dr Muhammad Shoaib said that gender equality could guarantee peace and stability in our society. “It is our shared national responsibility to recognize and institutionalize gender rights,” Dr Shoaib said.
