KARACHI: The 15th anniversary of the assassination of former prime minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto will be observed tomorrow in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh village of Larkana District, the police said Monday.
In a meeting, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Larkana, Imran Khan, called to finalise a security plan for the occasion, it was decided that foolproof security and traffic arrangements will be offered with the deployment of more than 8,140 policemen.
Rangers personnel would also be deployed, Khan said, briefing the participants of the meeting on the formation of several checkpoints, alternate routes, and parking routes.
He said the number of police patrolling has been increased by establishing several checkpoints. He also said that a strict checking of the participants coming to the rally had been ensured through modern machines, walk-through gates and watch towers.
The official said that the police would provide foolproof security to the participants. He further said the site of the event and the mausoleum will be monitored through surveillance cameras.
Bhutto, a charismatic and controversial politician who served twice as prime minister between 1988 and 1997, was killed in a shooting and bomb attack as she left a political rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007, two months after she returned from exile to contest the national elections.
The PPP government of Sindh has declared December 27 as a public holiday to mark the event, according to a notification issued by the province earlier this month.
“The government has been pleased to declare December 27 as a public holiday throughout the province of Sindh on the occasion of [killing] of Benazir Bhutto for all offices, autonomous, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the control of Sindh, except the essential services and those engaged in Covid-19 emergency and flood relief duties,” read the notification.
Separately, December 26 was declared a public holiday for Christian members of the provincial administration on the eve of Christmas.
