ECP bails PDM out of pressure by postponing Capital’s LG polls: Asad

  • Vows will use all constitutional, legal options to ensure early LG elections
  • Says scared imported rulers running away from polls to avoid defeat

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Secretary General Asad Umar came down hard on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for postponing the local government elections in the federal capital on lame excuse in order to provide safe passage to the imported rulers to escape the looming crushing defeat.

However, Asad Umar stated that the imported government could not escape the defeat, as PTI filed an intra-court appeal without waiting for the decision of the commission and hoped the justice would be done and elections would be held anytime soon.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he made it clear that the imported government was looking for lame excuses to run away from the elections and the biased ECP helped the regime in this regard.

Asad Umar has said that the ECP helped PDM by postponing local government elections in Islamabad by reversing its own decision, as Rana Sanaullah said that they would use every tactic so that elections could not take place.

Asad went on to say that these crooks did have the courage to compete PTI Chairman Imran Khan anywhere, as he routed them everywhere in the country.

He said that the Sindh government would try again to postpone the elections in Karachi and Hyderabad, whereas in Islamabad opponents ran away from the LG elections.

He said that the decision regarding the postponement of the Islamabad LG polls was not unexpected since the ECP was not functioning as an independent state body, adding that the excuse made by the electoral body for postponing the elections had nothing to do with reality.

However, Asad stated that the PTI would continue its struggle for empowered local body system in the country and would exercise all constitutional and legal rights to ensure holding of the LG polls at the earliest.

Asad expressed optimism that they would get relief from Islamabad High Court to this effect.

He said that the imported rulers made a mockery of the constitution and the law, as when elections were around the corner they announced to change the law in order to increase the Union Council and ensure direct elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor. He said that both of these things were done by PTI government and increased the UCs from 50 to 101, besides making election of mayor directly. However, he said that they challenged it in the court and the legislation was not completed.

Asad Umar said that attempts were being made to break PTI members, however, he added that if any MPA was switching loyalty, they knew that it would be their political death.

He said Imran Khan has everything, in a democracy power rests with the people, and the people are with PTI Chairman.

About Najam Sethi appointment, Asad said that those who were participants in the regime change were getting their share, now it was their turn and they should also get their share.

He said that former chairman PCB Rameez Raja was the only Pakistani who has scored three centuries in the World Cup, who played cricket all his life.

He said that the citizens of Islamabad should be given the right to take their decisions by using legal authority.

He said that 27 December 2007 was a dark day in the history of Pakistan. “Unfortunately, many times in the history of Pakistan, popular leaders were killed and removed from the path. This series has continued from Liaquat Ali to Benazir. Allah gave life to Imran Khan otherwise there was a whole plan to add to this dark chapter,” he added.
