LHC hears ex-governor’s plea against taxes on his properties abroad

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has conducted hearing on a petition of former Punjab governor Syed Ahmad Mehmood against the capital value tax imposed on his properties abroad.

Justice Jawad Hassan heard the plea of the former governor and sought an answer from the federal and Punjab governments, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Commissioner of Inland Revenue.

The TLTP learnt that the court directed to club the plea with other petitions. The former governor had challenged the federal government’s move to tax his foreign properties.

“I own properties in Pakistan and abroad,” he said in his plea. “I am paying tax in the country. Taxing the property abroad is unfair and against the law,” he added.

“The court should declare the federal government’s imposition of capital value tax on the foreign properties of the federal government null and void,” he pleaded.
