The Digital Media Revolution

Digital literacy has become essential

The world has evolved through many ages and generations, AND with this evolution earth went from the Stone Age to the modern world we live in today. Humans have progressed eminently in every field and with this progress a number of revolutions came that changed many things around the world completely.

A huge number of inventions were made by different scientists, teachers and philosophers that are still used all over the world and we cannot imagine our life without them. The invention of the clock, the bulb, the telephone, surgical instruments, war weaponry, the microscope are some of the most influential inventions that somehow brought  revolution in the world and changed the lifestyle of people forever.

Parents should take care that too much exposure to digital media can be harmful for children and teenagers as it can lead to a number of negative consequences. Although digital media and platforms are very convenient and essential in this modern world, sometimes the overuse of such things becomes a distraction from the important tasks, goals and responsibilities

Digital media has been one of the most influential revolutions in global history. The digital revolution is also known as the third industrial revolution, and was the shift from mechanical and analogue technology into digital technology. The starting point of this digital revolution is considered to be the invention of the computing system that was called electronic numerical integrator before.

When the digital revolution came it was considered that the world has progressed massively in every way possible. It enabled unprecedented levels of communication, community building, social interaction, breaking all the barriers of location, time and social context.

The era in which we are living today, is one where everything is directly or indirectly related to digital technology by one means or another. If digital media and technology stopped working for one day everything in the world would collapse and it would face a major crisis. Digital media is any form of media that takes electronic devices for its distribution, it includes robotics, ATMs (automated teller machines), computers, televisions, telephone, mobile devices, laptops and radios, among others.

The digital revolution radically changed the level of interaction between companies and individuals. Small businesses were suddenly given access to larger markets that resulted in a boost to the economy and a higher productivity rate. The digital revolution has also led several inventions to become obsolete that brought widespread social impact and lifestyle changes. It also opened the doors for digital marketing and running online business.

The new criteria of online banking, bill payments, fee submissions, virtual visa card, online money transfer, has made life much more convenient than before. However, safety and security measures should always be kept in mind while using such technology. One of the most important things while using the digital media is to be digitally literate.

Digital literacy not only helps us in our education but also at our workplaces. In today’s world students need to learn much more than just reading and writing. When we say that only reading and writing is not enough, it does not decrease their importance, however it is also important to become digitally literate so that students develop technological skills through learning different aspects that are important and would benefit them in their education and career, enriching the students’ creative thinking and integrating them into today’s digital world. Teaching digital literacy in secondary and primary schools is all about understanding that today’s children need different types of skills and technological knowledge in order to evaluate their work and engage with the global community.

Students who are not digitally literate have to struggle through a lot of difficulties in universities while making their presentations, projects and assignments and thus it affects their grades badly. We cannot get hired for a job if we don’t have the access or do not know the use of digital media’s basic platforms like sending emails, creating presentations, making reports and a lot of other basic techniques.

We work in a society where communication and access to information is mostly made through digital technologies like social media, Internet platforms and mobile devices. The incredible advances in technology have changed the ways people communicate, interact and work with each other.

People can communicate with each other through emails and phone calls no matter how far they are from each other. As the world continues to transform and settle more into the digital age, Pakistan has been moving into digital transformation as any other country is doing but lacks the basic human resources to provide opportunities for its people within the country.

However, in a developing country like Pakistan where children are not even able to have access to schools it is almost impossible to make them digitally literate. It is unfortunate that a lot of people are unprepared and they lack the knowledge and skills which has hindered people from fully utilizing the opportunities available on digital platforms.

Then Prime Minister Imran Khan had launched a Digital Media Development Program (DMDP) for the skill development of Pakistan’s youth for the growth of digital media workshops and creating opportunities for the young generation of Pakistan to learn. Nowadays technology and media is used by a majority of the population in numerous countries whether literate or not.

Using digital media without the correct knowledge and information can be harmful. People face cyberbullying, hacking, receive fraudulent emails, unknown links and many other things that can be handled correctly only if we are digitally literate and know about the technological media.

This has made the digital media more dangerous, as excess knowledge about digital media can also be harmful and could be used for wrong purposes.

With the digital age came a widespread use of social media that greatly influenced the younger generation. Instead of using the digital media for studies students sometimes drift into other activities like those social and gaming apps that waste time and that distracts children from studying properly. The exposure to such technology should be age-restricted.

Parents should take care that too much exposure to digital media can be harmful for children and teenagers as it can lead to a number of negative consequences. Although digital media and platforms are very convenient and essential in this modern world, sometimes the overuse of such things becomes a distraction from the important tasks, goals and responsibilities.
