Governor says polls date can be announced after ‘LHC interpret its verdict’

SAHIWAL/LAHORE: Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman on Saturday said that the election commission could not give a satisfactory answer to his questions, saying he has approached the high court and pleaded for “interpret its decision on election.”

”The election date can be announced after the court’s interpretation,” he declared while talking to media in Sahiwal here on Saturday.

“I hadn’t signed the summary for dissolution of the provincial legislature thus I am not entitled to give the election date,” the governor argued, elaborating his announcement of election date would be unconstitutional.

Recently Shahzad Shaukat Advocate filed a petition on behalf of Governor Balighur Rehman, seeking interpretation of the Lahore High Court’s decision.

“The bench has ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to consult with the governor over the election date”, petitioner said. “The governor hadn’t signed the summary for dissolution of the provincial assembly,” he pleaded.

Meanwhile, Governor Blighur Rehman said that the government was committed to bring economic stability in the country and resume the journey of development. He said that the country needs a strong economic base at this time for which everyone would have to play due role. He said this while visiting stalls set up by various industries at ‘Made in Sahiwal Expo 2023’ organized by the Sahiwal Chamber of Commerce at the Hockey Stadium today.

The Punjab governor said that the country is facing many challenges at present, and the government is striving to bring the people out of this difficult time. He said that the business community is standing with the government even in this difficult time. The governor said that no business activity is small. He said that all types of businesses contribute to the development of country. He added, whether it is to increase the value of the commodity, to make cloth from cotton or to make a medicine from herbs, it leads to social development.
