Petition filed in LHC challenging the size of federal cabinet

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) received a challenge to the formation of theĀ federal cabinet, the largest in Pakistan’s parliamentary history, on Thursday.

The petition, filed by Barrister Azhar Siddiq, claimed the ever-expanding federal cabinet of 85 members violated Article 92(1) of the Constitution, which specifies that the size of the cabinet cannot exceed 42.

Siddiq argued the oversized cabinet was a burden on Pakistan and pleaded with the court to issue an immediate order to reduce its size.

On February 8, Shehbaz Sharif appointed five new special assistants to the prime minister, increasing the number to 40 and bringing the total number of the cabinet to 85. The federal cabinet division issued a notification of the appointments.
