SHC takes up plea today: Hassaan Niazi acquitted of sedition charges

KARACHI: The judicial magistrate Karachi (East) on Wednesday acquitted Hassaan Niazi – the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in a case for inciting people to revolt against national institutions.

On the other, the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday fixed for hearing a constitutional petition filed by PTI’s focal person Hassaan Khan Niazi’s father against registration of cases and arrest of his son.

Earlier, the District East Police produced Niazi in the court of judicial magistrate Karachi (East) in a case lodged against him on the complaint of a citizen named Muhammad Iqbal in the Jamshaid Quarters police station.

After hearing arguments, the court discharged Hassaan Niazi from the charge of sedition and issued release orders.

The Karachi police on Tuesday took custody of Hassaan Khan Niazi after an Anti-Terrorism Court granted his two-day transit remand to Sindh police.

The FIR

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hassaan Niazi and his accomplices had been booked in a separate case in Karachi for inciting people to revolt against national institutions.

According to the FIR, Hassaan Niazi was involved in inciting people to revolt against national institutions and attempted to provoke disharmony in a video on social media. The statement has created anger and distress among the masses, the FIR further said.

It is important to mention here that Barrister Hassan, the nephew of former prime minister Imran Khan, was first arrested by Islamabad police from outside Judicial Complex, despite securing bail.

Niazi was then moved to Quetta where a case had been registered against him for inciting violence and interfering in government affairs.

SHC fixes plea for hearing against Hassaan’s arrest

Meanwhile, the SHC fixed a constitutional petition filed by PTI’s focal person Hassaan Khan Niazi’s father against registration of cases and arrest of his son for hearing on Thursday (today).

Hassaan Niazi’s father Hafeezullah Niazi appeared before Sindh High Court with his lawyers. He requested the court that the case pertaining to his son’s arrest be heard today (Wednesday).

Justice KK Agha replied that court had immense burden of other cases on Wednesday so hearing of the petition was not possible on the same day. He remarked that court will begin hearing of the plea on Thursday. The SHC fixed for hearing Hafeezullah’s plea for March 30.

Hafeezullah, in his petition took the stance that his son was being involved and arrested in fake and baseless cases. He prayed to the court to declare his son Hassaan Niazi’s arrest as illegal and null and void.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s nephew Hassaan Khan Niazi was taken into custody by a Karachi police team from Lahore.

The four-member team of the Karachi police reached Lahore to arrest Niazi.

On Monday, an anti-terrorism court had handed over Barrister Hassaan Niazi to Karachi Police on a two-day transit remand. Police produced Niazi in the ATC on Monday and sought from the court his transit remand for an appearance in a Karachi court in connection with a case. The court granted the remand after which four policemen visited Lahore to take him along.
