PESHAWAR: The cost of the project for protecting prevent irrigation canals from sewage water has increased to Rs8 billion from the initial estimated cost of Rs2.5bn.
The Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) said that instead of dumping sewage water in Peshawar’s waterways , it was proposed to develop an alternative system for it. The Peshawar High Court (PHC) had also issued directions to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to protect irrigation canals from pollution.
According to the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA), the cost of the project has increased manifold and revised estimated cost will soon be submitted to the Provincial Development Working Party for approval.
During the constitution of the project, several roads will be affected, therefore, funds have been allocated for it. Besides the rehabilitation of affected roads, provision of electricity and other facilities and purchase of land for the this project have also led to increase in the cost of construction.
According to sources, in the package one of the project, 80% work has been carried out on Warsak Gravity Canal, 70% work on Hazar khwani Canal and 75% work has been completed on Kabul River Canal.
