GILGIT: An SUV ran over six children who were celebrating Eid ul-Fitr in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghanche district on Saturday, killing three and injuring three others, according to a rescue official.
The incident occurred in Barah Bala village, where the children, dressed in new clothes, were on a road. The out-of-control Skardu-bound Toyota Land Cruiser crushed them while they were going to a nearby shop, according to locals.
The driver of the vehicle, reportedly a military officer, was detained by the police, who have launched an investigation into the matter.
It is requested that the accused should be handed over to the police. Are there two laws in Pakistan? Separate for you & separate for us,this is atrocity. We respect the Pakistan Army & demand that the accused not only be handed over to the police but also take steps to punish them https://t.co/JFv0ifhrXy pic.twitter.com/PqjGdl8VVW

The rescue team provided initial medical aid to the injured and then admitted them to the District Headquarters Hospital Ghanche for further treatment. One of the injured children is said to be in critical condition.
This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in the region. Last month, a Skardu-bound passenger coaster crashed into a ravine on the Karakorum Highway near Chilas in the Diamer district, killing three and injuring 18.
In February, 25 passengers from Gilgit-Baltistan died when a Rawalpindi-bound passenger bus from Ghizer fell into a ravine near Kohistan.
