Citizen petitions LHC to restore Punjab Assembly

LAHORE: A citizen filed petition in the Lahore High Court on Saturday, seeking restoration of the Punjab Assembly.

Sharafat Ali, the petitioner, contended that since the election to the dissolved assembly could be held within the prescribed constitutional period of 90 days, the elected provincial assembly should be restored.

The Punjab governor, chief secretary, and former chief minister Pervaiz Elahi have been made respondents in the application.

He contended that there is a deadlock existed between the ruling PDM and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf over the election date and there seemed no chance of elections to the assembly within the prescribed time frame.

The petitioner sought restoration of the assembly on the plea that the caretaker government had completed its stipulated tenure of 90 days and that the election to the Punjab assembly was not in sight.
