Tenure of Chairman Lahore Gymkhana reduced to one year

LAHORE: A three-member committee of Lahore Gymkhana Club (LGC) has reduced the term of LGC chairman to one year from stipulated three years besides proposing to hold the annual election of the Club in December this year.
It is pertinent to mention here that before 2014, the tenure of LGC chairman was only one year, which was extended to three years by the body elected in 2014.
Informed sources have confided in daily Pakistan Today that an extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) was held on April 29, 2023, at the Lahore Gymkhana to discuss the proposed resolution to amend Clause 7.1 of Article of the Association of Lahore Gymkhana regarding tenure of Committee of Management (COM).
The EOGM, the sources said, formed a committee comprising of Khawaja Khalid Farooq, Naveed Afraz and Malik Tariq Ali to seek views of the members on the future tenure of the chairman. After the vote, the committee held its meetings on April 30 and May 01 to count and compile the results for both options.
According to results, a total of 729 members voted in favor of one year tenure while 584 voted in the favor of two-year tenure. After results were declared, the Chairman LG Salman Siddique announced that as per the members’ wishes, elections would be held after one year and the next elections will be held in December 2023.
A member of the LGC Talat Khan informed this scribe that the important thing was that it was the third time that a majority of members have voted in favor of a one-year term for the COM.
“The two earlier voting sessions were held in March 2018 and January 2021 when Taimur Azmat was the honorary Secretary and sent a letter to the Registrar confirming it. This leaves not the slightest doubt what the Club members want and their views have not changed even after five years. The number of votes cast this time in favor of one year is one and a half times the votes cast five years ago,” he concluded.
