ISLAMABAD: As a number of party leaders parted ways with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) following the government crackdown in wake of May 9 incidents, party President Chaudhry Pervez Elahi Monday reaffirmed his commitment to the party, saying that he would stand by former prime minister Imran Khan and his party “like a wall”.
“We will continue to stand with him,” asserted Elahi in a video message. “Moonis and me are standing with Imran Khan together, but that doesn’t mean we support his narrative,” he added.
Elahi emphasized that maintaining good relations with the army has always been a priority for him. He acknowledged the importance of a strong bond between the PTI and the armed forces, recognising the institution as a vital pillar of the nation.
During the video message, Elahi reiterated his duty to support Imran Khan during challenging times. He clarified that he held no anger towards Chaudhry Wajahat and expressed no regrets regarding his decision to leave the PTI.
Elahi’s focus remained on his commitment to standing alongside Imran Khan and the PTI, regardless of any differences that may arise.
The former Punjab CM further emphasised that the army is an integral part of Pakistan, highlighting the PTI’s efforts to foster cordial relations with both the army and the establishment. He commended Imran Khan for fullfiling the promises made to him and his party, reinforcing his loyalty and unwavering support.
In his concluding remarks, Elahi likened power to something transient, highlighting its fleeting nature. His statement suggested that his loyalty lies not in personal gain but in his dedication to the PTI’s vision and principles.
Moonis Elahi also reaffirmed his allegiance to the party leader earlier in the day. “Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi and I are very much part of the PTI and we stand by Imran Khan,” he told a private news channel.
This development comes at a critical time when former prime minister Imran Khan’s PTI is facing significant challenges due to the fallout from the party chairman’s arrest in a corruption case and the subsequent violent protests.
Earlier today, Chaudhary Wajahat Hussain, the younger brother of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain, announced his departure from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and return to PML-Q.
In a press conference in Lahore, Chaudhary Wajahat said that he and his son, Chaudhary Hussain Elahi, have opted to return to their home party after their stint with the PTI.
The former PML-Q president did not go into detail on the specific reasons for his departure, but hinted that intra-family differences might have been mended.
Wajahat, who last year had backed Punjab’s then-chief minister Pervez Elahi when the latter had left PML-Q for PTI, clarified that he was never officially associated with Imran Khan’s party.
