Freedom of expression vital to strengthen democracy: Information Minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that journalism and freedom of expression are essential constitutional requirements for strengthening the democracy.

In a statement on Saturday, while facilitating the newly elected office-bearers of Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), she said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the coalition government is taking all possible measures to promote freedom of media.

Marriyum Aurgangzeb congratulated the newly elected CPNE President Irshad Arif, Senior Vice President Anwar Sajid, Secretary General Ejazul Haque and other officer bearers.

Lauding the role played by the CPNE for strengthening democracy and promoting press freedom in the country, she expressed hope that the newly elected office-bearers would use their experience and skills to lead the CPNE towards further improvement.

The information minister said that the government would continue to cooperate with the CPNE to resolve the issues faced by newspapers, magazines in the country and to resolve issues faced by the media on priority basis.
