UAE’s COP28 President designate to explore renewable energy investments in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Sultan Ali Jaber, the President-designate of COP28 and UAE Minister for Industries and Technologies, is set to visit Pakistan on 6th July 2023, with a significant agenda of exploring investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

The visit holds great importance as it offers a chance to strengthen bilateral ties and foster cooperation between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the field of renewable energy.

During his visit, Sultan Ali Jaber, who also serves as the Managing Director and CEO of ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) and Chairman of Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), aims to discuss potential collaboration and investments in Pakistan’s renewable energy sector. The Ministry of Energy and Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) have been tasked with thoroughly examining a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company MASDAR and the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) of Pakistan.

The proposed MoU seeks to establish a framework for cooperation and exchange of expertise between the UAE and Pakistan in renewable energy development. It is expected to pave the way for joint projects, technology transfer, and investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector, aligning with Pakistan’s vision to enhance its clean energy capacity.

Recognizing the time constraints, the Ministry of Energy and AEDB have been urged to expedite the review process and complete all necessary formalities to sign the MoU during Sultan Ali Jaber’s visit. The collaborative efforts between the UAE and Pakistan in renewable energy will not only contribute to Pakistan’s energy diversification but also support its commitments towards sustainable development and mitigating climate change.

Renewable energy has emerged as a global priority, with countries striving to reduce their carbon footprint and transition towards cleaner sources of energy. Pakistan, with its vast potential for solar, wind, and hydropower resources, offers attractive investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The visit of Sultan Ali Jaber signifies the UAE’s keen interest in exploring these opportunities and contributing to Pakistan’s renewable energy goals.

The potential benefits of increased investment in renewable energy are manifold. It would help Pakistan address its energy challenges, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, create job opportunities, and promote a greener and more sustainable future. Moreover, collaboration with UAE-based entities like Masdar brings valuable expertise and technology advancements that can accelerate the growth of Pakistan’s renewable energy sector.

The visit of Sultan Ali Jaber holds the promise of a strengthened partnership between Pakistan and the UAE, with a focus on sustainable energy development. The signing of the MoU during his visit would serve as a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two countries and open doors for further cooperation in the renewable energy domain.

As preparations are underway for Sultan Ali Jaber’s visit, both Pakistan and the UAE are optimistic about the potential outcomes that would not only benefit the energy sectors of both countries but also contribute to the global efforts towards a cleaner and greener future.
