Rescue 1122 and WASA prepared for potential floods in Lai drain

RAWALPINDI: Rescue 1122, the emergency service equipped to handle potential flooding in Nullah Lai, has been placed on high alert to respond to emergencies effectively.

According to a Rescue 1122 spokesperson, rescuers stationed in low-lying areas, particularly in Katarian, Gawalmandi, Sowan, and other susceptible areas, will remain on high alert 24/7. They will provide prompt emergency response, medical treatment, and transportation services to potential flood victims.

The service has also urged people not to stand on the banks of Nullah Lai in low-lying areas during floods and to follow instructions from relevant departments.

Additionally, the administration has made all necessary arrangements to handle the flood situation.

A spokesperson for the district administration stated that the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), under the directives of Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha, has completed the cleaning work of Nullah Lai.

The cleaning of small drains has also been carried out to ensure smooth water flow during monsoon rains.

A spokesperson for WASA Rawalpindi informed that, as per the government’s instructions and in anticipation of above-normal rainfall during the monsoon season, a special campaign to clean sewerage lines had been completed. Modern winch machines were employed for the comprehensive cleaning of the lines.

The spokesperson added that Chatha and Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema inspected the progress of the sewage line cleaning during their visits to various areas.

To deter the illegal dumping of garbage and solid waste into Nullah Lai, violating the district administration’s orders, Section-144 has been imposed in the vicinity. Strict actions are being taken against those found in violation.

Furthermore, WASA has finalised the Monsoon 2023 plan, which includes the cleaning of sewerage lines, the annual cleaning of Nullah Lai, and the inspection of WASA machinery, as done each year.
