RAWALPINDI: Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), has expressed the nation’s anticipation for a decision from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the upcoming general elections.
He highlighted the lack of concrete indications suggesting that the elections would be held on schedule.
In a tweet, the former interior minister conveyed the prevailing uncertainty, stating that with only four weeks remaining until the completion of the assembly’s tenure, the public is confused about whether the elections will proceed as planned.
Ahmed criticized the government, asserting that it had not taken any significant action in the past fifteen months to address the concerns of the public.
He strongly condemned the record inflation, saying that those who bear the burden of purchasing flour, paying bills, school fees, and rent are exasperated with the government and have openly expressed their dissatisfaction.
Expressing the sentiments of the people, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed emphasized that the public is eagerly waiting for the elections as an opportunity to remove the current government through the power of their vote. He expressed dismay over the defiance of court orders and criticized the restrictions imposed on the media.
The AML chief voiced his concern about the treatment of political workers, likening it to the treatment of terrorists, and highlighted the lack of protection for the dignity of individuals. He warned of a potential public outburst, emphasizing that it would be beyond anyone’s control.
He further criticized those who advocate for the sanctity of the vote, accusing them of humiliating innocent voters. He claimed that people are being abducted from their homes, and their voices are being silenced.
He urged the government to hold a single press conference that can address all these concerns and provide clarity.
