Accidents Surge: Govt to deploy motorway police on GB highways

ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to enhance traffic safety and promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, Qamar Zaman Kaira, the Adviser on Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs to the Prime Minister, has issued directives for the immediate implementation of motorway police deployments on critical highways.

As per details the decision came during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad, where top officials and authorities discussed ways to prevent traffic accidents in the region.

The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including the Secretary of Kashmir Affairs, Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan, IG Motorway Police, IG Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, along with other senior officials. The main focus was on devising strategies to ensure safer travel in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region of immense importance for tourism.

Highlighting the significance of Gilgit-Baltistan as a popular tourist destination, Adviser Kaira underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of both visitors and locals. Detailed assessments were carried out during the meeting to identify potential danger spots along critical routes, such as Dasu to Hannya, Jaglot to Skardu, and Babusar to Chilas.

A comprehensive survey of approximately 140 locations was completed, marking areas deemed hazardous concerning traffic. These proactive measures are aimed at safeguarding the lives of travellers and enhancing the overall travel experience in the region.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan and officials from the motorway police reported the successful completion of a joint survey of critical routes in the region. They identified potential risks along the Dasu to Hannya, Jaglot to Skardu, and Babusar to Chilas highways. The meticulous survey laid the groundwork for subsequent actions.

Adviser Kaira immediately directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) officials to liaise with the Gilgit-Baltistan government to expedite the implementation of protective barriers and clear signage at the identified sensitive locations. Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, he urged swift coordination between the NHA and the Gilgit-Baltistan government to ensure the rapid progress of the action plan.

Beyond traffic safety, the meeting also delved into crucial factors such as staff availability, infrastructure, and financial matters related to the deployment of motorway police in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan government pledged its full cooperation, offering necessary resources and infrastructure to support the efforts of the motorway police in ensuring safe and smooth travel on the highways.

With these swift and proactive measures in place, Gilgit-Baltistan is set to witness a significant boost in tourism while ensuring the safety and well-being of its visitors and residents. The implementation of motorway police deployments, coupled with the support of the government, is expected to make a positive impact on the region’s travel landscape, enhancing its reputation as a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travellers.
