Call to update our education system

GUJRAT: A renowned educationist and founding vice chancellor of the University of Gujrat (UoG) has stressed the need for updating the education system to catch up with the rest of the advanced world.

Prof. Dr Nizamuddin, former chairman of the PHEC, expressed these views while addressing a one-day seminar on “Scientific and Sociological Research Methodology” here at Hafiz Hayat Campus on Thursday. He was the chief guest of the seminar which was part of a grand seminar series organized by Hayatian Science Society and Club of the UoG. It was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Muhammad Mushahid Anwar. Other guests of honour included Dean Prof. Dr Faisal Mahmood Mirza, Director Media Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Coordinator HSSC Dr Zahid Anwar,  chairpersons of various departments and senior administration officials of the varsity.

The  seminar aimed to enlighten the students with the latest perspectives of scientific and sociological research and their intellectual training.

Dr Nizamuddin underlined the need for a complete overhaul of the current education system, saying our youth must know the practical implications of the knowledge and skills they gain at the universities. “Since economic development is directly related to the development of science and technology, a scientific way of thinking or approach will give the much needed impetus to our education system,” he said.

“Educational curriculum should be revised and updated according to the needs of the market and industry,” Dr Nizam stressed.

“With the unemployment among the youth touching an alarming 80 per cent, it is the duty of universities to prepare students for the job market.  Compared to other countries, only 8 to 9 per cent of students in Pakistan have access to higher education.  This gap can be successfully filled through online education,” Prof Dr Nizamuddin said.

Prof. Dr Muhammad Mushahid Anwar reiterated his commitment for excellence in academic and research development.

“A strong and pleasant relationship between students and teachers is an important part of campus life. The growth and success of a higher education institution hinges upon excellent leadership and a strong vision,” Dr Mushahid said.  Sheikh Abdul Rashid said that Dr Nizamuddin’s broad vision, and excellent leadership qualities acted as a beacon of light in the early years of the varsity.

A large number of students and teachers from various departments participated in the seminar.
