Although digital devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets have made life more convenient for everyone, excessive usage of these devices can have serious consequences on people, especially children. Nowadays, most children have digital devices, which they can be found using most of the time. This is affecting their academic performance as well as disrupting daily routines. If their use is restricted, they become aggressive, hyperactive, and disobedient.
Excessive usage of electronic devices among children can cause hyperactivity and impatience hindering brain development. Prolonged usage can also lead to physical ailments such as poor posture, eyestrain, back pain, sleeplessness and mental stress, which can ultimately hurt overall well-being. Children and teenagers prefer spending time on their devices than with their family or friends, which affects their cognitive development. The failure to interact with people in person is eroding their ethical and moral values.
A viable solution to reduce the usage of electronic devices is by replacing them with other activities and establishing a structured routine. Educational institutes and parents should work collectively on changing children’s habits and activities. For instance, children should be encouraged to adopt different hobbies such as reading, participating in sports, undertaking art, etc.
