The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) recently claimed to have taken a significant step to tackle gender-based violence by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The MoU emphasises the inclusion and mainstreaming of women with disabilities in their efforts. NCSW joined hands with STEP and other organisations such as the United Nations Population Fund to develop a strategy to address violence against women.
Besides assisting women in getting out of life-threatening situations, NCSW should also extend their support to the children of these women by housing them in safe environments. In the past, many such efforts have been undertaken but they have borne little fruit. Some have accused different organisations of misuse and management of funds and resources. Therefore, the relevant government departments should ensure that the resources are used appropriately and monitor the progress of new initiatives.
In addition, women’s access to education and healthcare should be enhanced through tailored initiatives to further empower them and allow them to have more agency over their choices. Investments in women’s education and healthcare can have a more positive impact and benefit society at large. Thus, comprehensive and multi-faceted steps should be undertaken to support and emancipate women.
