Peshawar’s key development projects hampered by cost overruns

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Development Authority is facing setbacks as a result of the prolonged lack of implementation of funds from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Department.

Now, more funds are required than initially allocated to complete crucial development projects.

According to sources, last year, nine projects were included in the development program, which were expected to be completed by June 2023. However, due to the failure to release funds by the finance department, these projects have not been completed on time.

These projects were included in the budget for the current fiscal year, with an allocated budget of over 270 million Rupees. The projects encompass upgrades to Ring Road, beautification and improvement of Peshawar’s rivers, Peshawar Uplift Program, betterment of Warsak Gravity Canal, and the introduction of an alternative sewage system.

Several of these projects were supposed to be completed by October, but once again, the Finance Department has not released the necessary funds. As a result, these projects are unlikely to be completed even by October, leading to cost overruns in the millions.

The Peshawar Development Authority has been directed to expedite the approval process for all these projects, which will require several more months, and efforts will now focus on completing these projects by June 2024.
