PTI’s Sanam Javed files contempt plea against IGP, CCPO in LHC

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javed on Saturday filed a contempt of court petition against Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP), the CCPO Lahore and others in Lahore High Court (LHC).

According to details, the PTI activist filed the contempt petition through advocate Shakeel Pasha and named various police officers, including the Punjab IG Police and the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore as respondents.

In the petition, Sanam Javed said in compliance with a court order, the police officials were supposed to submit a report on the cases to the Lahore High Court.

Citing the police, the petition stated two cases were registered against her, but she was arrested in a third case after getting bail in the previous cases. She was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in connection with the two cases.

The petitioner prayed the court to take action for contempt of court against the police officers for contempt of court.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sanam Javed Khan was rearrested shortly after the anti-terrorism court discharged her in the Askari Tower attack case on October 21.

The PTI activist was rearrested from the court premises in another case related to vandalising the PML-N office.

Javed, who was allegedly involved in creating a law-and-order disturbance and attacking Jinnah House following the arrest of party chief Imran Khan on May 9, was arrested outside the prison.

May 9 events

Violent clashes broke out across Pakistan after the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan were arrested at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday.

The protests were held in remote and major cities as the party workers are agitated due to their chairman’s arrest, with Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad summoning the armed forces to ensure law and order.

Army installations and Corps Commander’s house in Lahore came under attack during a protest by PTI workers.

It was also reported that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Ali Nasir Rizvi sustained severe injuries while clearing.

On the other hand, a local court in Lahore on Saturday extended physical remand of former Punjab chief minister and PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in an illegal appointment case for two more days.

The ACE Lahore produced PTI President Pervaiz Elahi before Judicial Magistrate Imran Abid and sought his physical remand in the Punjab Assembly appointments case.

Judicial Magistrate Imran Abid approved the ACE plea and extended Ealhi’s remand for two more days.

ACE’s investigating officer Muhammad Sabtain told the court that they took Elahi to his residence on Zahoor Elahi Road, where a sum of Rs4.1 million was allegedly retrieved from his bedroom, situated adjacent to a garage on the left side.

The officer emphasised that the recovery was made with Elahi’s confirmation, as he was present during the search at his house.

However, countering the ACE’s assertions, Elahi insisted that he had been in jail throughout the night and had not been taken anywhere. He stated, “I was asleep, and I have no knowledge of where they supposedly found the money.”

“It was only here in jail that I learned about the alleged recovery,” Elahi conveyed to the court.

Elahi claimed that the raiding officers had ulterior motives, seeking to secure their own positions.

Earlier, a district and sessions court Lahore discharged former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi and PTI president from a case pertaining to illegally enhancing the crushing capacity of sugar mills.
