BRI boosts internet development in less developed countries: report

BEIJING: The growth rate of internet use among 15 of the 21 less developed countries is higher than that of some developed countries, according to a report released by the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace Studies.

According to the World Internet Development Report 2023, released during the 2023 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit, this progress is attributed to the stimulation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), especially the Digital Silk Road.

The report also evaluated the development of the internet in 52 countries and regions around the world. It said the top 10 countries with the highest internet development level were the United States, China, Singapore, the Netherlands, South Korea, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Canada and France.

It said the scale of the country’s 5G and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) development and computing power ranked among the best in the world.

IPv6 is the most recent version of Internet Protocol, which helps identify and pinpoint local endpoint systems on a computer network and route online traffic.

China is at the forefront of the world in governing artificial intelligence and has provided the world with Chinese solutions in this aspect, said the report.

The country has released a set of regulations to protect minors in cyberspace, which will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

It has also deepened and expanded exchanges and cooperation in cyberspace globally, the report said.
