Construction experts highlight role of construction management

LAHORE: Construction experts in Pakistan’s real estate sector are highlighting the critical role of construction management, especially for major projects like industrial facilities, commercial properties, and transportation infrastructure. This focus is becoming increasingly relevant due to Pakistan’s growing population and the consequent need for more infrastructure.

In a conversation with Pakistan Today, Yasir Khan, a seasoned construction management professional, explained that construction management transcends mere building. It involves integrating sustainability, ensuring safety, managing changes effectively, and utilizing technology to boost efficiency and quality.

It is pertinent to mention here that Yasir Khan is recognized in the construction industry for his innovative approach, aligning with national and global standards. With extensive experience and profound knowledge, Khan has adeptly handled complex project challenges, showcasing exceptional intelligence and innovative problem-solving skills.

According to Khan, this field requires dedication, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. In his current project, a 10-story mixed-use development in Lahore, Khan is focusing on sustainability. The project incorporates energy-efficient HVAC systems, LED lighting, and solar panels. Emphasizing responsible building, the project also uses recycled materials and minimizes waste to reduce the environmental footprint.

Khan stressed the importance of effective change management in construction. His team’s robust process allows for assessing the impact of design changes or structural concerns on timelines and budgets. This involves close collaboration with architects and engineers and maintaining transparent communication with all stakeholders.

Regular safety training, strict personal protective equipment protocols, and comprehensive safety measures like barriers and fall protection are standard practices. The team is also prepared for emergencies with a well-defined response plan.

Technology plays a key role in enhancing efficiency and quality in Khan’s projects. Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the use of drones for site surveys have significantly improved project visualization, planning, accuracy, and efficiency.

Similarly, Abu Bakar Deewan, another construction expert speaking to Pakistan Today, emphasized the diverse skill sets required in construction management, including project and budget management. He noted that construction management teams are crucial for controlling costs, coordinating activities of various stakeholders, and ensuring timely project completion.

Deewan pointed out that construction management is key to minimizing risks and maximizing profits for developers and investors. It also plays a significant role in safety management during the construction process.

He highlighted the urgent need for robust infrastructure development in Pakistan, driven by its burgeoning population and rapid urbanization. Efficient construction management is essential for ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and sustainably.

In Pakistan, where regulatory oversight can sometimes be lax, Deewan stressed the importance of construction management in maintaining quality and safety standards. Professional construction managers are trained to anticipate and mitigate risks, ensuring that buildings are not only aesthetically pleasing but also structurally sound and safe, especially in disaster-prone areas.
